And so was also James, and John, the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men. And when they had brought their ships to land, they forsook all, and followed him. Luke 5:10-11.
Then answered Peter and said unto him, Behold, we have forsaken all, and followed thee; what shall we have therefore? And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. Matt 19:27-28.
I was invited to a South East stakeholders meeting organised by the independent corrupt practices and other related offences tribunal (ICPC) in Enugu where solution to corruption in Nigeria was been sought and I was surprised at the suggestions being proffered by quite a number of the participants. When it was my turn to speak, I told them that you can never solve a problem whose root cause you are yet to fully understand or consciously ignore. Corruption is majorly a reaction against a failed system. Any system that cannot guarantee the future of its citizens or staff will naturally experience mass corruption and labor turnover. The loss of trust by the led will naturally lead to the rise of rebellion against constituted authorities whether in a nation, church or organization. That’s for another day.
Looking at the story of Jesus and His disciples, I noticed that Peter and the other disciples asked no question as they abandoned all to follow Jesus. But sometime along the journey, after the initial zeal had waned, they had to ask the Master what the future holds for them in His system. Jesus did not shout them down or thought them to be carnal, He answered their question and put their hearts regarding the future at rest. No wonder Peter could offer his body to be burnt for the cause.
