And David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: but David encouraged himself in the Lord his God. And David said to Abiathar the priest, Ahimelech’s son, I pray thee, bring me hither the ephod. And Abiathar brought thither the ephod to David. And David enquired at the Lord, saying…
1 Sam 30:6-8a.
As I looked at the above account, I discovered that men can be likened to elevators in destiny. They can take you up and also bring you down depending on the button you press.
The same people that abandoned their businesses, homes and friends for David;fought for him and willing to kill for him were the same people planning to stone him at the time he needed their support most. Prior to this time, they have never seen him cry, depressed or discouraged but here he was expecting encouragement and comfort from his comrades yet none came until he turned to God.
What lessons was God trying to communicate to David by this experience?
LESSONS:
1. The love, help and attention of man is necessary but limited and cannot be relied upon.
2. Never attribute your achievements and successes to your human connections.
3. Men are channels and instruments in the hands of God for your lifting but must never be seen as sources.
4. Your greatest ally can become your greatest sink hole when you take the relationship for granted.
5. No one is interested in a discouraged, depressed and frustrated fellow. Your joy is your fuel for profitable associations and unstoppable acceleration.
6. Your internal environment (what goes on in your mind) determines your external experience (what happens around you).
7. Let God be your first resort in the face of challenges not your last resort. It will save you tears and insults.
8. God will never impose His directions on you but will always be willing to help you when you are ready to invite Him.
9. Let where you fell not become your grave, God is not through with you yet.
10. It is possible to feel defeated, discouraged and depressed at times because you are human but the vision for the palace must not be abandoned.
11. The current challenges around you may be a Divine set up to lead you in the direction of uncommon breakthrough if you can look up and look forward.
12. What you see, hear and how you feel are the tripod of your destiny where God is constant.
COUNSEL:
1. Always look inward, upward and forward when experiences seem contrary to expectations.
2. Always remember that every test is a raw material for testimonies where God remains a constant.
