After this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, which is called in Hebrew, Bethesda, having five porches. In these lay a great multitude of sick people, blind, lame, paralyzed, waiting for the moving of the water. For an angel went down at a certain time into the pool and stirred up the water; then whoever stepped in first, after the stirring of the water, was made well of whatever disease he had. Now a certain man was there who had an infirmity thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he already had been in that condition a long time, He said to him, “Do you want to be made well?”
The sick man answered Him, “Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; but while I am coming, another steps down before me” John 5:1-6 NKJV.
Looking at the above story, it’s logical for others who had received their miracles and those who had no affliction to call the man names. Some believed he was not smart enough while others may have made a mockery of him for being at a place of miracles without experiencing any for thirty eight years.
Many however, failed to understand that the man was not only battling a physical ailment but also a psychological one occassioned by the impact of rejection and abandonment from friends and family. He laid and helplessly watched how the friends and relations of fellow invalids made efforts to take them to the pool when it is stirred. It’s possible he had begged those around to also assist him but they were too busy with their problems to give him any attention hence, he concluded that until you have someone you don’t have hope and a future and therefore resigned to fate.
He was therefore surprised to see someone show interest in his condition after many years of hopeless expectations, and was quick to respond based on what he knows to be the only rule. But that encounter with Jesus turned the tide, changed the rule, suspended the protocol and made a celebrity out of him.
LESSONS:
1. People will judge you based on what they see or hear but only you and your God know the efforts you have put in that are yet to manifest into results.
2. Psychological defeat is the worst form of defeat. Learn to always differentiate your situation from your destination.
3. That someone went ahead of you does not foreclose your possibilities. Refuse envy, jealousy or anger against them.
4. Make excuses for people when they don’t appear to help you because everyone has what they are battling per time. It will help your heart.
5. No man’s experience equals the perfect will of God. Don’t narrow your faith or limit your God based on what you have seen or heard from others.
6. The way you have seen things done is not the only way they can be done, be flexible with knowledge.
7. Never resign to fate because of your state, Divine intervention does not have timetable or follow a schedule.
COUNSEL:
1. Respect people, expect help but never rely on any man.
2. Rejoice with people whose turn it is today and sow into their miracle where you can, it will soon be your turn.
3. Having done all you know, please still stand strong in faith knowing that God can turn things around anytime without seeking human permission.
4. Always remember that with God, impossibilities don’t exist. Your testimonies shall make news.
5. Men may express their opinions but only the counsel of the Lord shall stand in your life.
